Young Adult Treatment Programs Directory (ages 18-25) What is the difference between a residential treatment center and a boarding school? The main differences are:
Boarding Schools are more focused on creating a learning environment to prepare troubled teens for college and careers. Some boarding schools offer a therapeutic environment, but it is typically not as focused as therapy that will be found in a residential treatment center. Boarding schools do not typically accept troubled teens with behavioral problems. Residential treatment centers are highly focused on therapy of all kinds and creating program structures for troubled teens suffering from drug and/or alcohol use, behavioral disorders, social skills problems, and in general troubled teens that are not looking to the future and are engaged in self destructive behaviors. Residential treatment centers typically have an academic component and are fully accredited with certified teachers, but again the focus is more on behavior and not education in preparation for college. Residential treatment centers are also licensed and regulated by State run agencies where boarding schools are typically not regulated or licensed by State agencies.
