Residential treatment centers change long term behavior of troubled teens and young adultsResidential treatment centers for troubled teens are becoming more frequently a popular transition from effective wilderness treatment programs. That being said, troubled teens do not necessarily need to come from a wilderness program in order to do well in a residential treatment center. Residential treatment centers can stand on their own.
The effectiveness of residential treatment centers with troubled teens comes from the typical longer periods of stay. A typical residential treatment center for troubled teens will last a minimum of 8 months and some last even longer. In order for proper treatment and long term behavioral change in troubled teens in these programs typically 10-12 months is required. A lot of this depends on the maturity of the troubled teens entering the program; and the strength of the program. Often times troubled teens will do better in a residential treatment center after they have been through a wilderness program. This is due to the rough edges of typical troubled teens being shaved off in the wilderness so that when the troubled teens enter the residential treatment center they are ready for schooling and changing long term behavior. Answers For Parents is an advocate of this approach to treatment of troubled teens. Sometimes visiting a wilderness program before a residential treatment center is not an option, but parents need to understand that if a residential treatment center states that they are a minimum of 8 months that what they are really trying to say is 10-12 months is how long it will take to modify long term behaviors and 8 months is the exception. The reason for this is the first couple months can possibly be very difficult to start any real work with troubled teens while they are still rebelling. The rebellion period in wilderness programs is much shorter and therefore treatment of troubled teens behavior can begin sooner. In any event, with 10-12 months to work with residential treatment centers do incredible work in modifying troubled teens behaviors. Most residential treatment centers have full accredited academic courses that allow for students to rapidly progress through school. Sometimes troubled teens that are a year behind in school work due to poor behavior can make up a year within months. Often residential treatment centers employ or have access to independent educational planners who can make an independent educational plan (IEP) for each of the troubled teens in the program. These IEP's streamline the students course work so they can graduate on time and also focus on weaknesses in the troubled teens education.
Troubled teens receive intensive individualized therapy in residential treatment centers usually on a weekly basis similar to wilderness programs. In residential treatment centers parents are also allowed to visit their troubled teens in the programs after teens meet certain behavioral criteria. Many residential treatment centers also allow for students to travel home during the program to be tested in the same environment where they gave into peer pressure and the world. Answers For Parents is a strong advocate of residential treatment centers and we only refer to the best programs across the country who meet our strict criteria that covers safety, effectiveness in treating long term behaviors, and an excellent reputation with local and state program regulating agencies.
